Vehicle Care Tips

Repair to Replacement Cost Ratio.

When you bring your 10 year old vehicle in to Bernard’s garage to have any major repairs done and you start to decide if the car is worth repairing or not, that is where Repair to Replacement cost ratio (RTRCR) comes in. You will have to decide if what is owed on the vehicle (if anything) and the cost to repair the vehicle warrants moving on with the repair. More often then not  it is less expensive to repair the vehicle in the long run than it is to get into a car payment  and start over. There are many factors involved when making these types of decisions and the team at Bernard’s Garage is well trained to help you “crunch” the numbers to help you decide what is in your best interest for your situation. At Bernard’s Garage, it is not always “the money” that is the best intrest for the company, although it plays a big part of the whole picture, helping families make good decision’s carries alot of weight with families and their friends!

Summer time vehicle maintenance

Well here we are again at the beginning of another great northwest summer, how ever long it will last is another great debate for another time. Your vehicle has a maintenance schedule that for the most part will cover most all of your everyday driving needs. When summer comes there are usually several trips planned out of town that will require a little more attention to detail when it comes to certain systems on your vehicle.

Cooling system maintenance is very important, a complete inspection of all the hoses, clamps, seals and gaskets is a must before heading out on that road trip. When coolant sits in a car all winter constantly getting hot and cold, it tends to act as an acid due to a natural breakdown process attacking things like gaskets and seals. There are even certain vehicles that have “pot metal” or “cast” fittings that heater hoses and coolant hoses plug into that can be eaten away and weakened by this process. There is nothing worse than having a significant breakdown of the cooling system causing major engine damage up to and including blown head gaskets and lower end bearing failure all because of a $14.00 heater hose fitting that has weakened over the years was not replaced.

At Bernard’s Garage, we thoroughly inspect all aspects of the cooling system, belts, hoses, water pump, heater core, thermostat, pressure test and inspection of any tell tale signs of something that has leaked in the past and left a trail of dried coolant. It is a good idea to replace belts, hoses, coolant and fasteners at your regular mileage interval maintenance even though alot of auto repair shops dont recommend it on the basis that ” it looks fine”.

Bernard’s Garage has always preached ” Maintenance is a good investment” and will never under sell a repair, if there is a doubt, change it out and save you some grief on the road.

That darn little light…

So it’s time to take your car to DEQ and on pops the Check Engine Light.. Don’t Panic! We got you covered.
Here at Bernard’s Garage we have a full line of Computer Diagnostic Equipment and the Certified Technicians to determine that cause. Anything from a defective gas cap to any one of the dozens of sensors on the vehicle can make that light come on.

Fuel Systems

Fuel systems in today’s cars are complex computer controlled systems. Consisting of multiple sensors to monitor and control the amount of fuel entering the engine and help reduce emissions.

Braking System

The braking system is your car’s most important safety system. Periodic brake inspections should be part of your routine maintenance schedule.

Wheel alignment

Wheel alignment is part of standard automobile maintenance that consists of adjusting the angles of the wheels so that they are set to the car maker’s specification. The purpose of these adjustments is to reduce tire wear, and to ensure that vehicle-travel is straight and true (without “pulling” to one side). Alignment angles can also be altered beyond the maker’s specifications to obtain a specific handling characteristic. Motorsport and off-road applications may call for angles to be adjusted well beyond ‘normal’ for a variety of reasons.
